Thank YOU for Reading!

I would like to take a moment to thank all the readers among us.  You know who you are!  Many, like me, grew up with their nose stuck in a book.  You know the kid who stands in the lunch line and has to be shoved a bit to keep moving because she just can't put the book down for even a second?  That was me! I love that feeling and wish that more people could experience the same joy and contentment that I do from reading.

As a reader and especially as an author, I value the fact that people take time to read.  In our way-too-busy society, finding/making time is more than a notion.  Yet many do.  I have espoused the benefits of reading in previous writings but I believe it warrants a revisit.  Here goes!

  • Incites creativity.  Whether it's a sci-fi novel or a leadership workbook, reading spawns creativity by producing new knowledge or enhancing existing knowledge.  This leads to another great reason to read!
  • Enhances vocabulary.  The more you read, the more words you will discover and master.  This can prove extremely beneficial for both children and adults. In an age where social media has tainted the King's English, do I really need to sell the benefits of improved vocabulary?
  • Enables tranquility.  How do you feel when you read a spiritual book?  A romance novel?  What about a suspenseful thriller?  Reading has been shown to lower blood pressure and there is research that supports that it has a positive impact on mood disorders.  For these reasons, it is often suggested that we read nightly before bed to create a tranquil, relaxed disposition before drifting off to sleep.
  • Improves memory.  As you read, it is critical that you remember characters, plot and sub-plot details and essential facts.  Practicing this daily stimulates the brain in ways that have been shown to not only improve the memory but also delay some forms of age-related memory loss.
  • Develops writing skills.  If you are an aspiring author, I strongly encourage you to read.  In addition to enhanced vocabulary, reading will allow a budding author to have a greater appreciation for prose which will aid in the development greater fluidity, cadence and believability.
These are but a few benefits of reading and if you are one of millions of people who partake daily, I say THANK YOU!  Now, if you're like me, you're anxious to get back to your current book so I bid you Happy Reading!
